Simply put: Being a follower of Jesus means following Jesus. Jesus did say follow me didn’t he? If our discipleship is not leading us to give away our lives to other people, at great personal cost, as Jesus did, if we are not making disciples, at great personal cost, as Jesus did, then we are not following Jesus. There is a fundamental call to followers of Jesus to be involved in discipleship and generous compassion to the poor and the broken and the underprivileged. There’s more in the ancient manuscripts about justice, compassion and discipleship than evangelism.
